Italian Cashmere: The Complete Guide to Italy’s Finest Luxury Knitwear

Cashmere is judged by more than softness. Fibre length, yarn construction, finishing and knit density decide whether a sweater feels good for one winter or many. This guide explains what cashmere is, why Italy is known for it, what to check before you buy, the main Italian brands, and how to care for it. It is part of our Italian Designer Clothing hub.

We have not tested these sweaters. Prices change, and we could not verify current US prices for each brand, so we give price tiers instead of figures. Check each brand’s site before buying.

Quick Answer

What Is Cashmere?

Cashmere is the fine undercoat of cashmere goats, raised in Mongolia, China and Central Asia. The fibre is collected by combing during the spring moult. It is much finer than most sheep’s wool: cashmere is commonly cited at about 14 to 19 microns, compared with coarser wools at higher diameters. Fine fibres feel softer, but fibre length matters at least as much for durability. Industry sources usually say it takes the combed undercoat of several goats to make one sweater; we have not verified a precise number.

Why Italy Is Known for Cashmere

Northern Italy has long been a textile centre, with the Biella area known for fine wool and cashmere yarns, and Prato for textiles more broadly. Italian mills spin, dye and finish cashmere for both Italian houses and international labels. “Made in Italy” is a legal labelling claim that applies per product, so check whether the yarn, the knitting or only the finishing happened in Italy. Our guide to how Italian cashmere is made follows the process, and why Italian cashmere costs more than Mongolian explains the price gap. What Defines Quality Cashmere

FactorWhat it meansWhat to check
Fibre lengthLonger fibres make stronger yarn that tends to pill lessBrands rarely state this; ask or read the maker’s description
Fibre diameterFiner fibres feel softerLoro Piana states about 13.5 microns for its Baby Cashmere
PlyTwo-ply or more is generally sturdier than single-plyProduct page or label
DensityA denser knit tends to hold its shape and feel warmerStretch gently; it should spring back
FinishingMechanical brushing vs chemical softenersTreatments can wash out; ask the maker

The softest sweater in the shop is not always the longest-lasting. Very soft, lightweight knits may wear faster than denser ones, though brands and constructions vary, so judge each piece on density, ply and fibre label as well as feel.

How to Choose

  • First-time buyers: a two-ply crewneck in black, charcoal, navy or camel.
  • Work wardrobes: a fine-gauge polo or V-neck in muted colors.
  • Quiet luxury: focus on texture and color, avoid logos.
  • Maximum value: versatile pieces you will wear often rather than novelty cables or oversized shapes.

Is Italian Cashmere Worth the Price?

A sweater worn often and kept for years costs less per wear than one replaced each season, but we do not quote figures because prices vary widely. Cashmere is bought to wear: resale demand is limited and depends on brand, condition and color, so do not treat it as an investment.

Care Guide

  • Washing: follow the care label. Hand washing in cool water with a wool or cashmere detergent is the usual advice; do not wring, and dry flat. Dry cleaning can be used sparingly.
  • Pilling: remove pills gently with a cashmere comb rather than pulling them. Some pilling is normal in the first wears.
  • Storage: fold rather than hang, and store clean in breathable bags with moth protection. Avoid plastic.
  • Moths: clean garments before storage, because moths are drawn to soiled wool.

Sustainability

Cashmere production is linked to grassland degradation and water use. Some brands, including Zegna with its Oasi Cashmere line, promote traceability programs. Treat sustainability claims as brand statements unless they are backed by a named certification, and look for the certification details on the product page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Italian Cashmere

What makes Italian cashmere different?

Italy has a long textile tradition and mills that spin and finish cashmere for many labels. Quality still depends on the specific yarn and garment, so check fibre content, ply and construction.

Which Italian brand makes the best cashmere?

Loro Piana has the strongest technical reputation, Brunello Cucinelli is known for textured quiet luxury, and Zegna for tailored cuts. The best choice depends on fit, budget and style.

How long does cashmere last?

That varies with fibre quality, construction, wear and care. Denser, well-made knits and careful washing generally last longer.

Why does cashmere pill?

Short fibres work to the surface and tangle. Some pilling is normal, and a cashmere comb removes it.

Can cashmere be worn year-round?

Fine-gauge cashmere is comfortable in mild weather, while thicker knits suit winter.

What should I buy first?

A two-ply crewneck in a neutral color from a reputable brand.

Is cashmere a good investment?

It is worth buying to wear, but resale value is limited and not guaranteed.
